Abstract

Housing has a very direct and positive impact on our life and it is an important social need for all people. Yet, the challenge to provide affordable housing especially to the poor household is a problem faced by all countries today. We are unable to meet the housing need. Today, not only the demand and the urgency for affordable and adequate housing is high and severe, the uncertainty of achieving it is even higher.


This paper tries to come up with proposal towards an affordable housing delivery model in an integrated and inclusive manner by exploring the alternative systems of housing in Urban India.Since there is a gap in matching the objectives of affordable housing scheme, with the collective livelihood needs of the members of the local community who are its intended beneficiaries: The focus of this research, therefore, is to develop a model for successful implementation of affordable housing schemes through participation and enablement of community members from the local communities. This tries to look into the role of women members of the community and tries to see if they could be the active participant in the implementation programme of affordable housing.


In order to develop the model for affordable housing through participation and enablement of Women from the Local Community, a detailed study on people proactive participationhas been carried out on an in-situ housing project, which is considered as one of the most successful housing project for urban slum in Thiruvanthapuram City, Kerala.
